PhD Student in Brechin Group wins prize at RSC Dalton Community Scotland and Universities of Scotland Inorganic Conference (USIC) 2026

This conference, held at Heriot-Watt University on the 1st and 2nd of September 2026, is a PhD-led event and features talks from students and early career researchers.

Annabel MacGregor was awarded the prize for best oral presentation for her talk titled "Magnetic Properties and Structural Transformations of an [Fe16] molecular iron oxide". This work focuses on the synthesis and magnetic behaviour of a molecular iron oxide cluster which takes inspiration from naturally occurring minerals, such a magnetite and ferrihydrite. The research brings together a range of different techniques and theoretical studies, and gives insight into magneto-structural relationships and how members of this family of materials interconvert. It has also recently been published in Small (https://doi.org/10.1002/smll.76177).

I was delighted to be able to present some of the research from my PhD at this conference, and feel very proud to have been awarded an oral presentation prize! The Scottish Dalton and USIC meeting is always a really enjoyable event, and my thanks go to the organising committee for doing such a fantastic job.

Her research has also recently been published in the nanoscience & nanotechnology journal Small
