My Course Choice

In 2017 I graduated from the University of Cyprus with a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Chemistry. I then decided to take a gap year to travel in Europe, where I also took some internships and acquired valuable laboratory experience.

Returning home, I started looking for Master’s programmes in Medicinal Chemistry, which was the area I had identified as most appealing to me, and that is when I found MSc Medicinal and Biological Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh. The course objectives seemed to align with my interests, plus the city seemed like the place to be.

My Time at the University of Edinburgh

Studying at the University was an amazing experience. The facilities were great, and I loved the international vibe of the whole city. Edinburgh is just a great city to live in; gorgeous views, an endless variety of students’ clubs to join and excellent facilities. After all, I still live and work in Edinburgh, which shows just how much I love this city.

MSc Medicinal & Biological Chemistry provided me with knowledge on biology, pharmaceuticals and the interface with chemistry. I had a very good relationship with the academic staff and I was the class rep, so I interacted with them regularly, giving positive or negative feedback as needed. The coordinator of our programme was very helpful and was there to assist us whenever we needed her.

After Graduation

Job seeking is never easy and it is inherently very competitive and stressful. After applications and interviews I got a position as an Analyst at Charles River Laboratories in February 2020, and I worked there for a year. My Master’s degree had definitely helped me get this first job position, being a recent graduate from a local university.

Since 2021, I have been teaching Chemistry and Physics at Edinburgh College. Teaching has been a whole other experience, very different to the industrial environment, but also very interactive and engaging.
