Research Ethics and Integrity

The College of Science and Engineering has adopted the UK Research Integrity Office's Code of Practice for Research and the Concordat to Support Research Integrity, embedding those in School-specific policies. The College has developed a Research Ethics and Integrity framework that suits its disciplines. The School of Chemistry follows this framework.

Research Ethics Reviews

The University of Edinburgh has a commitment to promote and facilitate the conduct of research ethics and integrity. Research Ethics Reviews processes intend to prompt the considerations of risks and responsibilities in research.

While the framework applies to any person who conducts research at the College, including research and teaching staff, undergraduate honours students, postgraduate students or visiting scholars and collaborators, it is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator (PI) to secure Ethics approval. In Schools where students might bring forward their own research proposals, they will seek Ethics approval under the guidance of their supervisors. In some cases, the research might need external approval (e.g. NHS Review Boards for human tissue research, Home Office licenses for animal research). If this is the case, the Schools will help their PIs through the process and keep a record of external reviews.

Research Integrity

The College of Science and Engineering has a form for reporting research misconduct allegations. Further information and the reporting form can be accessed via the link below. Research integrity can be discussed and issues raised with the Integrity Officer at any time.
