Research image shortlisted for a prize in the British Heart Foundation’s Reflections of Research competition

08NOV2024
A microscopy image collected by Agustina Salis Torres, previously a research assistant in Mathew Horrocks’s and Vicky MacRae’s (Roslin Institute) groups, has recently been shortlisted in the British Heart Foundation’s Reflections of Research competition.

The image, which also won School of Chemistry's own image competition, shows mitochondria within calcified smooth muscle cells, and is part of BHF- and BBSRC-funded research aiming to understand the role of these organelles in cardiovascular disease.

As a finalist, Agustina was invited to showcase her image at an exclusive event in London, and her image has now been published in the New Scientist Magazine (https://institutions.newscientist.com/article/2454851-dazzling-images-illuminate-research-on-cardiovascular-disease/).

We spend a lot of time in the group aligning lasers and building microscopes to collect high resolution images. It’s always uplifting to have researchers generate such stunning images, and a privilege to have these recognised both as high-level scientific and artistic works. I’m particularly fond of this image, and even have it hanging in my own home!”
