Fermentation Suite

The School of Chemistry Fermentation Suite was founded in 2002 in order to provide a platform for producing milligrams and grams of recombinant proteins for biological chemists and biologists. Our expertise is in the production of recombinant expression constructs for E. coli and Pichia Pastoris and the fermentation of these species on a 10-15 litre scale for protein production.

If you wish to express a protein or create a microorganism with a biological activity, we can:

  • Discuss your requirements and indicate possible solutions.
  • Create expression constructs from gene sequences, and can optimize expression of the desired protein.
  • Generate category 1 recombinant microorganisms and establish optimal conditions for protein expression or activity.
  • Dovetail work with other Chemistry and KB facilities such as NMR, MS, the EPPF and the Edinburgh Genome Foundry.
  • Can facilitate feasibility studies, important for R&D and Start Ups
  • Can find a solution/method for “I want to express X”
