School of Chemistry researchers unlock the sound of chemistry

Researchers from the School of Chemistry help to answer what does Chemistry sound like by turning scientific data into music and their work has just been featured in Nature.

Professor Colin Campbell, postdoctoral researcher Joshua Levinsky and PhD student Cecilia Hong appear in a new article exploring the growing international movement to “sonify” data, transforming complex information into sound and music.

The feature highlights several years of work from researchers at the School of Chemistry, including the innovative DataJam events held in 2024 and 2025. These sessions brought scientists and musicians together to experiment with new ways of listening to data, producing original musical pieces inspired directly by chemical research.
