School of Chemistry Silver Sustainable Lab Award Renewed

The School of Chemistry has completed the audit process for the renewal of our Silver Sustainable Lab Award by the Department of Social Responsibility and Sustainability (SRS). The School as a whole once again demonstrated excellent practices and a commitment to continue improving the sustainability of our labs.

Our work to embed sustainability across our wider School culture was recognised, particularly our work to ensure policies, inductions and teaching principles address the topic, as well as our research practices. Our use of LabCup as a chemical inventory system, recently installed He liquification system and ongoing work to ensure best practice is shared across the School and beyond are other key elements.

Our labs met or exceeded the requirements for the Silver award across nine categories, including ensuring that equipment and lights are switched off when not in use, fume hoods are used appropriately, and freezers are maintained in an efficient manner. We continue to recycle where we can and ensure our waste is managed safely, working with teams across the University to work towards our sustainability goals.

Commenting on the recent Silver award, Jason Love said;

It makes me proud that we have achieved the Silver labs award again as it is critical to us as a subject and a School that sustainability is core to all of our activities. Through these activities we align well with the University’s Strategy 2030 and with all of those who value sustainable practices.  Thanks to everyone in the School for their commitment to this ideal and for helping gain this award.

As well as the lab awards, the School of Chemistry is engaging in a number of other initiatives through SRS, and our research, and  teaching will continue to strive to make a difference.
