Two Chemistry PhD students reach University 3 Minute Thesis Final

Congratulations to School of Chemistry PhD students Isolde Marsland and Emma Tomlinson, who are through to the University of Edinburgh 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Finals.

3MT College of Science and Engineering heat winner Isolde Marsland and People's Choice winner Emma Tomlinson won through an incredibly competitive heat to secure their places in the prestigious University of Edinburgh 3MT Final on 20th June!

  • First place: Isolde Marsland- School of Chemistry
  • Runner Up: Larissa Palethorpe- School of Physics and Astronomy
  • People's Choice winner: Emma Tomlinson- School of Chemistry

The Final is organised by the Institute for Academic Development (IAD) and more details can be found on the IAD website. The 2024 Three Minute Thesis Competition final will take place on the 20th of June from 2pm in the Larch Lecture Theatre, Nucleus Building, Kings Buildings. It will also be live streamed.    Isolde’s PhD research takes place under the co-supervision of Professor Caroline Kirk (School of Chemistry) and Professor Louise Horsfall (School of Biological Sciences) and focuses on the development of electrode materials formed through biological processes. Isolde aims to develop a sustainable route for cathode recycling, creating a completely circular battery economy.

3MT 2024 CSE Winners Isolde Marsland and Emma Tomlinson

I am absolutely delighted to have won the CSE 3MT heat and to be through to the University final, alongside my great friend Emma. The earlier rounds of the competition have been a fantastic showcase for all the excellent science research at the University of Edinburgh, and I cannot wait to hear about the Arts and Humanities research that goes on too!

Emma’s PhD research takes place under the co-supervision of Dr Antonia Mey (School of Chemistry) and Dr Davide Michieletto (Institute for Condensed Matter Physics and Complex Systems). It focuses on high throughput drug discovery, using experimental and computational techniques to find and test different anti-cancer drugs with an initial target of topoisomerases, enzymes vital for DNA replication.

I am really excited to have made it this far in the competition! It's wonderful to be going through the stages with my great friend, Isolde. It has been fun practicing together, and my presentation skills have gotten much better from this! I am really looking forward to hearing the other finalists' presentations. 3MT is a great way to make your PhD more accessible and understandable, it’s great to hear about the research at the university through this competition.

It is great news that two of our talented PhD students, Isolde and Emma, are in the 3MT Final. They have done amazingly well to reach the final and everyone in the School of Chemistry wishes them the best of luck. It’s a fitting testament to the quality of our PhD students and their research and it’s exciting to have three students from the CSE in the final.
