2 awards for Chemistry postgraduate student Congratulations to Euan Doidge who won the Edinburgh University heat of the 3 Minute Thesis competition. As well as being the judges' choice, he was the "people's choice". The 3MT presentation title summary was "WEEE are Golden: metal recovery by solvent extraction", dealing with the use of chemistry for more efficient and environmentally friendlier processes for gold recycling from waste electronics. Euan's research is looking itno designing new reagents for the recovery of critical metals such as gold and lanthanides from waste electronics and natural deposits using solvent extraction. Metals as chloridometalates are transferred into a water-immiscible phase using remarkably strong, selective and simple reagents that interact in the "outer-sphere" through supramolecular interactions to form "clusters" of extracted metal/ligand species. The 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition requires doctoral researchers to compete to deliver the best research presentation in just 3 minutes (and one slide). It is based on a concept developed by the University of Queensland which quickly spread across Australia and New Zealand, and has gone global.
