Pressure Effects on Re(IV) Monomers

Research published in Nature Communications

Prof. Euan Brechin, Dr Stephen Moggach, Prof. Simon Parsons and colleagues from CSEC, Glasgow, Newcastle and Valencia have published a paper in Nat. Commun., on the effects of pressure on Re(IV) monomers.

Under ambient conditions these unusual species display long range magnetic order arising from the combination of large magnetic anisotropy and spin-delocalization from metal to ligand which induces important intermolecular (dipolar) exchange interactions. As these are determined by intermolecular distance, "squeezing" the molecules closer together generates remarkable enhancements in ordering temperatures, with a linear dependence of the strength of the exchange (J) and Tc with pressure.
