SIAS visit Broughton High School The Edinburgh Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) team made up of PhD students from the School of Chemistry: Emily Goddard, Daniel Cutler and Katie Grant. Ran a murder mystery workshop at Broughton High School in Edinburgh, on behalf of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Spectroscopy in a Suitcase program. The workshop comprised of using IR and UV spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry to help solve the murder case of Mr Blue, a fictional character. The workshop allowed Advanced higher students to gain hands on experience using spectrometers and tested their problem-solving skills. The workshop was a success and the culprit caught! Students were also able to use the spectrometers to analyse samples made during their Advanced Higher projects including using IR spectroscopy for confirmation that students had made cinnamaldehyde and paracetamol and test the purities. One student was able to use the equipment to identify an unknown compound as being methyl salicylate. Publication date 21 Feb, 2020
