Sutton Trust Summer School 2019

School of Chemistry welcomes high school students into teaching labs

We recently hosted school pupils in our teaching labs as part of The University of Edinburgh Sutton Trust Summer School. The summer school, run by the Widening Participation team, is aimed at pupils in S5 (Scotland), Year 12 (England or Wales) or Year 13 (Northern Ireland), who have always attended a state-funded school or college.

It helps build pupils' knowledge in a subject area they are interested in exploring at university while letting them experience university life and meet like-minded students.

The summer school is supported by a team of undergraduate and postgraduate student Group Leaders who work with staff from the University of Edinburgh throughout the week to make sure pupils feel at home and get the most out of their time in Edinburgh.

Sutton Trust Summer School 2019

This year, the School of Chemistry offered opportunites to undergraduate students and postgraduate students to work as demonstrators in Chemistry Labs. It was a great opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate students to develop their skills and experience working with young people in a Higher Education setting.

Thanks to the teaching labs technical staff (Elaine Sutherland, Robert Smith, and Scott Moonie) for preparing the lab equipment and ensuring these sessions are run smoothly.
