MChem student part of the University of Edinburgh winning team in the first round of 2019/2020 University Challenge. 3rd year MChem student Adam McLauchlan helped the Edinburgh team to success as it began the defence of its University Challenge title. The Edinburgh team this year are represented by Richard Moon, Adam McLauchlan, Isaac Stephens and captained by Emma Williams. The Edinburgh team comfortably won their 1st round match by 165 points to 90 against Birkbeck, London. They now progress through to the second round. Commenting on the first round win and his experience of the competition, It was an amazing experience. I almost didn't go to the try-outs last year because I would never have believed that I'd make it onto the team. As a child I loved watching University Challenge with my family, so appearing on it feels vaguely surreal. I'm really proud to be representing Edinburgh, and grateful to last year's winning team for helping us to prepare. It's really encouraged me to be more adventurous in trying new things, especially since there are so many opportunities here at Edinburgh! Probably the best part was meeting Richard Moon - a member of the Edinburgh team who's a distinguished civil servant in the FCO and former ambassador to Latvia (on sabbatical). Apart from the fact that Richard is utterly fascinating, it was a great reminder of the wonderful diversity of students at Edinburgh. Adam McLauchlan Here at the School of Chemistry we are very proud of Adam and the whole University of Edinburgh team competing in University Challenge. As defending Champions they handled the pressure extremely well and we wish them all the best of luck for the remainder of the competition.
