STEM Academies for Primary School Teachers

Academy pilot is first in a planned series to help Primary school teachers

We recently hosted the STEM Academy 2019 at the University of Edinburgh, in partnership with the University of the West of Scotland. The academies aim to increase the opportunity for primary teachers to become more familiar with how sciences are taught and developed in secondary education and gain a greater awareness of career prospects in STEM subjects.

This year we ran a pilot one-day long STEM Academy for primary school teachers including sessions on primary science led by Dr. Heather Milton (Royal Society of Chemistry education coordinator), Dr. Margaret Ritchie (UWS), Dr. Anna-Maria Maciejuk (School of Chemistry, University of Edinburgh), Dr. J.C. Denis (School of Physics, University of Edinburgh), Dr. Rowan Clark (Elementals Unleashed, School of Chemistry, University of Edinburgh).

In addition, there are two more STEM Academies in July held by the UWS (Paisley and Lanarkshire campuses). The UWS Summer STEM Academy is hosted in partnership with University of St Andrews, The University of Edinburgh, F1 in Schools, Denford, Royal Society of Chemistry, Science@Cwaben, Data Harvest, Timstar, The Solar Spark, Highland Council and Balnain Primary School.
